This year, the fifth annual Santa Monica Airport ArtWalk features live music and food trucks, in addition to the open studios, demonstrations and workshops. On Saturday March 19, 2011 from 12-5pm the City of Santa Monica Airport and Cultural Affairs Divisions invite the public to meet the resident artists of the airport arts community, a cultural resource located in a unique, creative atmosphere. One of LA County’s oldest operating airfields, Santa Monica Airport has a rich background as the former home of the Douglas Aircraft Company and the birthplace of the DC-3. The airport has developed over time into an arts incubator, and is home to a number of creative venues housed in converted airplane hangars.

More than 60 local artists and performers will have their private studios and works on view, including Santa Monica Art Studios and ARENA 1 Gallery, Santa Monica College Art Mentor Program and Ceramic Arts, Ruskin Group Theatre and Santa Monica Airport Artist Studios. Painting, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media will be represented and many artists will be selling work from their studios as well as offering refreshments.

Throughout the day there will be firing demonstrations of Raku Japanese pottery, highlights from the Ruskin Group Theatre’s popular monthly offering L.A. Café Plays and theater and art workshops for kids. The Mad Alsacians, an accordion-driven ensemble, will perform traditional 1930s – 60s French music and food will be offered from local restaurants Typhoon and Spitfire Grill as well as the Border Grill Food Truck and The Sweets Truck.

The ArtWalk is part of Buy Local Santa Monica Expo 2011, a free community event dedicated to showcasing local businesses and the importance of buying local.

Evolution/Revolution: the Interconnectedness of All Beings will be at Santa Monica Art Studios - Arena 1 Gallery.
