ICARUS/RISE is a provocative multimedia theatrical performance of new Iranian poetry, inspired by the Iranian dramatic storytelling tradition of Naghali. Woven of poems featured in BELONGING: New Poetry by Iranians Around the World (North Atlantic Books, 2008), ICARUS/RISE connects the myth of Icarus with the solitary journey of the artist or immigrant in the quest for freedom, and tells the 30-year story of the Iranian migration. By dramatizing new Iranian poetry--rather than the classical Persian poetry repertoire of Naghali--and using theatrical elements, ICARUS/RISE gives voice to global Iranians of the 21st Century, reflecting their experience in contemporary society.
